    Hello everyone, I'm new here.

Early this year we bought an Astra 2001 2.0dti in Germany (Opel actually) and brought it over to France to use here. It's very clean and on about 83,000 miles. Owned for the last few years by an older gent, so not so many miles per year later on.

The garage did us an oil change and we did the 1000kms to France.

She runs beautifully, starts first time no problem (even when left at an airport for a month) and is all round a pleasure to drive.

However, not long after bringing her over, she puffs out an embarrassing amount of smoke upon ignition. Dense blue/black/white (I've covered myself here, but it's not 'pure' black blue or white). Lasts about 15 seconds and it turns a lot of heads in the supermarket car park! After this, no more, and everything is completely fine.

It's most apparent when the car has been left idle for at least half an hour, and usually first thing in the morning (all regardless of outdoor temperature, indeed it was a hot Summer).

Our 'mechanic' mate ('enthusuiast') here says it's oil burning on ignition which makes sense as I've been reading up. He is very capable, but I wanted to see what I could find out for him before he spends hours messing about. I have read so many possible causes - so where do we start, and where do we go after we've started!

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated..

    Many thanks.

No lights, oil level spot on, and we've just done a fresh oil change and same issue persists :(

I own a 306 td a common problem is the belt slipping a tooth which causes smoke on start up and very loud engine,
I dont know if these have similar issues

Valve seals worn allowing oil to pass into the cylinder when stood, it does not take much oil to cause a lot of smoke. it's worth checking.

this sounds daft but glow plugs can cause smoke on start up as they are not working correctly and un burnt fuel will smoke !!

and as above fuel filter as well

We just changed the oil again.. Just to be sure. We used 5w40 (around 4.5l and around 1l of 10w40 as we didn't quite have enough).

I thought all was sorted as during the day I've tried starting her a couple of times and all was fine.. Except I've now gone out again and boof, a plume of black/blue/whiteish smoke.. Maybe not quite as bad as before.. :(

Valve seals = engine removal = maybe not the problem = a lot of work if it's not the problem

I always leave the plugs on for plenty after the light goes off..

Is there any way of testing valve seals before taking an engine block off? Or any other diagnostics before drastic measures?

It seems pretty low mileage for this kind of thing, I thought diesels do big miles before this sort of stuff..

    Many thanks.
