View Full Version : My Cav SRi is on Death Row

Just come back from an early MoT as someone was interested if I got a 12 month ticket on it. Failed:cry: due to corroded ferrules on rear brake hoses and structural corrosion in front wheel arches. The old MoT still stands and runs out at the end of August, so I'm just gauging interest in breaking for spares after then. It's on a G-plate with 187,000+ on the clock, running like it's got 18,700, totally bog standard and mechanically totally servicable (as far as I am aware).

Oh well, another one bites the dust!!! If there's enough interest I'll break, otherwise off to the breakers (where quite a few parts came from anyway).

WHere did you get those wheel trims for an SRi?

I still got my original SRi trims :)
Obviously they are nto on the car, they are in my garage :lmao:

Mate for spares, I would be interested in the passenger foglight. If its nice and clean with no chips, cracks or colour fading I'll have it.
For free perhaps? :lmao:

They were on the car when I bought it 40,000 miles and 5 years ago. I believe they are the correct trims for an early SRi, if I'm mistaken then someone please correct me.

No they are the correct trims. They should be 195/60/R14s too.
Looks about right from here

The last time I looked it had 3 intact mounts and only the usual amount of "gritblasting". Not long ago either coz that's when I found out pre-facelift fogs don't fit facelift bumpers:grrr . Offside one is good too atm. All contributions to the M-plate SRi on-the-road fund gratefully accepted!!!:lmao:

Spot on. Tyres are Good Year Eagle NCT3's, 2 with life left in them (as long as they stay on the back), 2 catching up on the front.

That is a very short fail list and not aot of work for what still looks a very tidy old car- don't think you'd make much at all breaking it

There was also the little matter of the rear wheel bearings needing a tighten up (big deal) and the rear brake HOSES needing changeing due to badly rusted ferrules, but I still carry the scars from restoring a Granada 2.8 Ghia X Mk.2. Believe me I don't want to go down that road again. I'll get pix of the rust, then you can better judge.

Here we go, the corrosion which killed my faithful Cav. I've left them large for clarity.

I'm no body repairer, nor do I have a pet welder. In all honesty this is what it failed on, but there's more lurking further back in the floorpans. What I was concerned about after reading various threads on here was what lay behind the sill covers, and did the rust in the chassis which seems to have resulted in the breaking of so many GSi's etc affect my car? There's some scary pix on here.

AYe that aint too bad to weld up!
If you got the tools or willing to pay someone -- have done soooo much worse!
Half an Sill plus front chassis rail on one car !
As for the brake hose - a good going over with a small wire brush bit o grease should see to them!
Altho the short bit o pipe wouldnt cost much to replace

Still a cheap repair even if the work was all done by a garage. Is no-one on here local that would give you a hand or do the work for you?

As I said further up the thread, I participated in the 2 year as-and-when restoration of my Granada a few years ago by a sympathetic local repair shop, and if I had known what it was hiding under the surface I wouldn't have even brought the car, never mind set about fixing it. The bloody thing cost me an arm and a leg to get back on the road and now it stuffs me for the other arm and leg to feed it. At the same time I'd find it hard to stomach selling at the inevitable horrendous loss. The corrosion pix are "as found", I would lay ready money (if I had it) that the rust is much more extensive. So it is with a heavy heart that I chose to start this thread. It was a good honest MoT it had, and the guy was good enough to point out further trouble lying in wait. It's replacement is sitting on the drive while I get it to a standard I'm happy with. Pix will get posted later in the gallery.

Ok, I'm getting more interest in this than I expected, so a couple of points:
1. the reason the car won't be available until August at the latest is that it's final weeks here will be spent helping out a workmate who is in deep transport :turd for work and is one absence away from the sack through personal domestic issues. Unfortunately he works the opposite double day shift to me or there would be no problem. For insurance purposes the car will transfer into his name for the duration, then come back to me for disposal. The original plan was to sell him a car with a 12 month MoT but obviously this cannot now happen. Use of this car will remove immediate pressure on him to get wheels, I can use my Granada mentioned in this thread until I get my M-plate on the road (end of the month I hope, unless it fails it's MoT as well!), and he'll return the G-plate to me as soon as he's got longer lasting wheels. I only put it up this early to try and gauge interest in spares salvage as I didn't think anyone would want the car whole. Bless you all:Cool2: .
2. It's only fair that I work a first ask first get system, so as I type this I've had one parts requests and a whole car request in the thread and a parts request and a whole car request by pm. From this point on whole car requests will be given preference and I'll pm your request status to you.

That's a very rare colour for a SRi - mostly only F platers. Save it!!!!
I have people phoning me up now looking for old SEH SRi Cavaliers because they're getting hard to find and newer stuff just isn't up scratch in comparison. If only they'd rust proofed them properly!
