Hi all, first let me say what a great site this is (been viewing for months) and have decided to ask for advice something that doesn't seem quite right. The thing in question is How cold should the air con get?. Mine gets quite cold (colder than normal cold air from vents) but a friend has a honda which gets quite a bit colder. Is it that hondas have better air con or would a re-gas help.
(dont want to spend the money for no improvement) Car is a Vectra CD 2.0 16v by the way. Thanks for any help.:Cool2:

I dont know if there is a way to test how cold it should be, but so long as it is cold enough to cool your car down when its hot i really wouldnt bother. I have heard that playing about with your Air Con is a bad and potentially expensive idea.

it might need the cooling gas topping up, typically the gas can leak out after a few years, least I had mine done and it made a lot of difference for abt 30 quid

with recirculation and revs at abt 3000 the temp of the air coming out was abt 2 or 3 deg C after it was done

Thanks for reply's. Probably will get the re-gas done, had the car 2 years and not not sure when last re-gas was. On the bright side first payout on the car in the time i have had it.

Whats involved with the re-gas?
It sounds like I need this done - My air con has not been working for months.
It has been into 2 seperate garages for servicing/mot etc and both garages have said no fault found, but its definitely not working.
Does anyone think a re-gas might sort this out?

Servicing wouldn't check the aircon as it's more of a feature rathe r than integral system. Kind of like the stereo or electric windows etc.

A regas it's self can be got for £60 but what they'll most likely do is suck out everything in the system so it's in a vacuum then wait to see if the vacuum fails (ie if there's a leak air will get in). If it holds then they'll wjack gas in and off you go. If it doesn't hold you'd best get your cheque book out. It can be something simple like a seal gone which might cost an extra £10 to diagnose. 50p in parts and maybe £50 in labour. or it could be a whole series of leaks etc and costs mega bucks. The nature of the aircon system is that it has to be used frequently to keep the system lubricated. If it has 1 leak that is left and the system stops working. CHances are more and more leaks and parts will fail due to the system not being used
