Car. Omega, 2.2 CD, 2000 'W', facelift. (Fly-by-wire). Auto.
Component needed: Used indicator stalk. I got mine from www.leavalleymotors.co.uk £20+£3.51pp.
Remove control stalk cowling. It's in two halves, separated horizontally. Bottom half secured to car with 3 crossheads in triangle pattern underneath. Top half secured to bottom half with two crossheads on front face. Screws are under plastic covers, not visible until wheel turned through 90 degrees.
Unscrew steering column adjuster stalk to allow removal of bottom half.
Stalk and switch body slides out after pressing in side retaining clips. Wiring plug held in with grey slide. Remove slide and release plug.
Fit replacement stalk which has one extra little plug on a flying lead. Additional socket is tucked away beside main socket. Fit retaining slide (or in my case, forget to fit retaining slide!).
Slide main switch body back in until it locates.
Re-fit cowling. Getting the rubber boots to locate properly was a little fiddly.
Go to vauxhall dealer and talk very nicely to mechanic. Cruise enabled with Tech2 in five minutes. Donate to mechanic's favourite charity.
That's it! It works! No brake switch change or extra fuse etc.

I now have an M reg 2.5 CDX TD (manual) which has a cruise control stalk fitted but the buttons have no effect. Apparently the setup is different for a diesel engine so does anyone know what I should be looking for to see if I actually have the required bits?

I too have a 2.2 CD auto. Is it really that easy to install cruise, I.e. just fitting a new indicator stalk? Don't you have to fit anything to the engine? I recall that the cruise system on my old Scorpio consited of a motor that tugged on the throttle.
Also, could you clarify what you have to ask a Vauxhall techie to do?

Yes, the same way....
This method applies to all the drive by wire engine varients i.e.:
2.2, 2.6 and 3.2 petrol
Plus the diesel power plants to.
No external motor is requried as the throttle is actuated by a motor assembly under the control of the ecu rather than a throttle cable and hence the required electronic control is already in place

My 2.2CD now has cruise! :bananasmi
It really was a piece of cake to do. The stalk cost £21 including deliver form lea valley motors, and came the next day. It took all of 30 minutes to fit.
The only annoying bit was paying VX £50 to enable the software (didn't get anywhere trying get a VX grease monkey to do it for £20 cash). I did a bit of an internet trawl in the hope some local garage / mobile mechanic might have a tech2 & be cheaper than VX, but didn't find anywhere.

I presume for pre facelift models this is a no no or far more complex?

It's not that complex because the wiring will already be in place. A fair bit more work though but not difficult.
You need to get the combined motor/control unit which is fitted under the bonnet, connect the cable coming from the motor to the throttle housing, then install the replacement stalk, and fit a new 4-pin brake switch (not always necessary, depends on your car) and a clutch switch.
A bit more involved but if you can get the bits it's not difficult. Also doesn't need enabled by tech2.

Had a wee go at this today whilst sorting something else on my pre facelift (1998 mini lift) MV6 Manual.
The clutch switch wiring was taped up next to the brake wiring loom. Its a white connector with two of the opposite corners 'chamfered'. This corresponds with the connection on the clutch switch which looks like this:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/hotel21/ABCD0003.jpg
The original 2 pin brake switch looks like this:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/hotel21/b871fe9f.jpg
and
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/hotel21/302ae2fe.jpg
Note the movement of the red bit. This is like a locking mechanism which prevents the release of the locking tangs to allow the switch to be removed. Take a look at the switches when in place and you will see similar. These need to be moved outwards, away from the switch body, to allow the switch to be removed. if you don't, the switch may well break and you will be far worse off.
The 4 pin switch looks like this:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/hotel21/ABCD0002.jpg
Note the largish cylindrical bit nearest the connection. If it looks like this, you are lucky, do nowt else in this area, other than the clutch switch, if manual. If its square, its 2 pin and needs swapped.
If you are fitting brand new switches ('cos the clutch switch is not fitted as standard and is as rare as rocking horse poo at the scrappies) then take care not to play with it before fitting.
There is a green plastic keeper fitted from the factory to prevent the depression of the switch prior to fitment. Once removed, I found that there is a sort of ratchet mechanism in the switch so that, on first depression, it assumes a 'working' position. If you do this early, it is an absolute bu**er to locate as the moving plastic bit (as in the two pin switch) moves, preventing the depression of the locking tangs. Ask me how I know....
The brake switch locates in the furthest away (highest) of the two square cut outs on the brake pedal carrier. There is a locating tang which allows fitment only one way. Look for it and it all goes together relatively easily.
Its like this:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/hotel21/9e5915e7.jpg
with the tang at top right, next to the green plastic bit that is used on the new switches to prevent early use.
Now, just waiting on the mount for the auxiliary pump on the inner wing so I can mount the rest of the gubbins and be 'cruising' for the summer!!

Surely extra bits are needed? Throttle actuator? Pedal switches?

Hello, I fitted the stalk and control unit/cable to my 2,5 v6 auto today but the buttons dont do anything. Do I Need to modify the wiring on the brake switch?
I would appreciate any advice. (First time using this site)

Hi,
Can anyone who has done this tell me what does exactly "enabling" mean? I've been to three Vauxhalls, one of them said it's not just like ticking a box or changing a value and I need to reprogramme the ECU!! The other one said as the car doesn't have CAN bus, it's not possible! Third one said I need to change the throttle body and reprogramme the ECU...
The car is a 52-reg Omega CD Auto 2.2 petrol and I've already put the stalk there. From what other people said above, it seems Vauxis know as much about cars as I know about girls lol Can anyone kindly tell me what exactly to ask them to do?
Cheers.
PS. When I asked them to do it without going to the reception, I was told it's a sackable offence!

I have a 2000 facelift, gls 2.5td auto. I fitted the stalk, but Vauxhall in Bristol (Dan Harford's) tried to do the enable in the ecu and couldnt do it they said the option wasnt available. Does anyone know the technical ins and outs of the ecu reprogram for this particular car/engine variant. Does anyone have a tech 2, I would happily travel to you to try it out and provide beer by way of a thank you...
Hi guys am new to the site today..lol
I'm very very imprest by this thread and i'm wondering if i can do this to my motor
2000 (W) 3.0 24v MV6 can i do it and is all i need the stalk and a greese monkey?
cheers in advance for any halp

For the 3.0 you need to install the full kit... cruise unit under bonnet (comes with throttle cable), new stalk, 4-pin brake switch and clutch switch.
It's pretty easy though, and you can usually pick up the bits 2nd hand for £50-60.

Hi everyone . I have just bought an Omega 2.2 DTI 2001 manual estate and by following the instructions posted here I now have cruise control for the price of a second hand indicator stalk . I didn't need any other bits and did not have to get it activated . I can't thank you enough .

I removed the instrument display looking behing it and cannot find any lead which would plug to it. I had most of the dash apart but no lead. Please have you any suggestions???
