This isnt rocket science and will say you £100 on buying a Steimetz/Irmscher grille:
Firstly you need a mk1 grille, then unclip and remove chrome V trim. Seperate slated grille melted on holders at points 1 to 5 the but leave 1 + 6 attached.

Using a dremmel or similar with thin cutting disc cut along the slated grill directly below/between points 1 + 6 leaving the plastic bar that the 3 securing brackets attached to the cars front panel (you could just remove the whole slated grille by removing points 1 to 6 and just cut accross with a junior hacksaw but you would then have to find a way of reattaching points 1 + 6)
The centre section of the slated grille should now come away leaving the colour coded bottom section with the plastic bar at the top. Next is to use some fibreglass to fill in the cutout section of the lower grille where the tip of the chrome V went, then sand, prep and spray to the bodies colour. When this is dry you need some mesh, don't get wicks chicken wire crap get something decent that can be easily cut with tin snips. Place the grille colour coded section facing upward onto some paper or cardboard and draw round the inside (to make a template)
When you have your template, cut it out so it is an extra 1 3/4 inches bigger to allow for overhang. Now you should have your grille with a big hole, cutout removed, sprayed and some mesh. Turn the colour coded grille faced down and place mesh over gap, use a permanent marker to draw the shape of the gap on the mesh and then make slits upto that gap about 1 3/4 inches apart (SIDE AND BOTTOM ONLY)
Now you could either leave the mesh silver/chrome (which in my opinion looks sh!te and after all there is no other chrome outside so why make it look pants?) Or you could spray it black like the Mattig/Lexmaul ETC grilles) im sure you dont need a diagram for that so off to halfords for a can of spray.
Now you have your mesh and a hole to fit so bend the tabs you have made down (when i say tabs i mean the slips you cut out earlier) and either use some more fibreglass mesh/resin or do what i did and use chemical metal.
All thats needed when its dry is to fit it and hopefully it will look lie the pic at the top. BTW don't hesitate to contact me if you are not 100% sure about anything.
