These are the only steps that we could take pictures of on my filter as I can’t get the clips off (I think they may be broken, I will have to have a look when it is on a ramp) but it will give you an idea of how to do the fuel filter.

My advice would be to jack the rear of the car up as high as you can and put on axle stands or wheel ramps if you have them. This will make it all so much easier when it comes to accessing the filter.

The quick guide goes as follows (click on the picture links so you will get the gist of what I am rambling on about)

http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/leeingib/?action=view&current=CoverBolts.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/leeingib/?action=view&current=CoverBolts.jpg)

Remove the cover from the engine (don’t know if yours has this or not), just remove the two bolts and the oil filler cap and remove the cover, not forgetting to replace the oil filler cap once cover is removed so nothing goes inside!

on your fuel rail you will see a black cover, looks like a dust cover for a tyre valve (just a tiny bit bigger) take this off and you should have a valve (yet again just like a tyre’s valve) underneath.

put a rag underneath and around the valve to catch any fuel expelled (worth putting the screwdriver on and putting the rag over the top of the screwdriver to stop it squirting out all over the place) there wont be too much but enough to squirt and if it does it will either find the two following things, your eyes (most likely) or the hot exhaust (if it is hot.) you do not want this! Just press down on the valve as you would to deflate a tyre. Replace the black valve cover (don’t need to do anything else with that now). Replace engine cover if you so wish! It’s up to you!

http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/leeingib/?action=view&current=LocationofFuelFilter.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/leeingib/?action=view&current=LocationofFuelFilter.jpg)

The fuel filter is on the passenger’s side of the car just in front of the rear wheel and about a quarter to a third of the way across the car. It is located at either the side of the fuel tank or just in front of it normally.

The tyre you can see in the picture above is the driver’s side rear tyre (just so you can get your bearings on the location.)

Firstly there is a clip that holds the whole filter to the car, you will work this out how to undo it as it is a very simple clip but immensely difficult to explain how to undo it I so I won’t even bother.

Secondly you will need to clamp the hose (set of mole grips but not too tight to split the hose) that comes from the fuel tank (under the rear seat) if your filter is quite clean you can look at the arrow but if not it is the other side of the filter that does not have the ridge around the edge of the filter (I think, just check on your new one). Be careful not to split the hose or clamp the end of the filter.

You must remember which way the fuel is fed (which pipe goes on what end of the filter, I think the bent fuel line, with an angle in it is the fuel line that feeds the engine, but please check!!!!)

As you will see from this picture there are two clips, one either side of the filter. (you can only see one in the picture) but there are two sides to each clip, they are quite difficult to get off when you cant really see what you are doing. The easiest way I have found so far is getting under the car and having a look (if you have a bit of common dog you will work it out) but (please bare with me, im trying to type this from memory from when we did my mates car about 2 months ago). You will see the black clip has like a housing and a clip inside, if I remember right you need to lift the little plastic lug up slightly (with a small flat screwdriver) so it will go over the ridge that is on the pipe on the filter. Once you have done this you will get a little fuel run out but don’t panic. The best way I have found is to crimp the hose before the filter in the fuel line and unclip the other side (the side that goes towards the engine) first. Put a container under the filter and let it drop down slightly, once you have one side unclipped it is a little easier to work with. Let the filter drain (a matter of seconds, 30 at the most, if it is still running out you have not clamped the fuel line properly.) now unclip the other side and remove the old filter. You will now have two white clips (I think) on the filter that need to come off and be put on the new filter, these are easy to remove and just put them on your new filter as they were on the old one.

When replacing your new filter the only thing you need to do is remember to check the flow of the filter (there is an arrow on your new one) make sure it is the right way round and push the fuel lines back on, I have found starting with the side that goes to the engine is easier but you may find different. Make sure they can’t be just pulled off and all the clips have clipped into place. If you want to at this stage wipe everything down that has got petrol on it (you shouldn’t have any really) and if you want start the car and check for leaks of any kind around the filter (a little may seep out but it shouldn’t, give it a wipe and if it stays dry you have just saved giving robbing Vauxhall your hard earned cash. If it does feel wet after you have wiped it just push the fuel lines on a little tighter then wipe again.)

Once you are happy that it isn’t leaking then clip it back in using the clip that is attached to the car and off you go.

Enjoy and most of all smile,

if anybody has anymore advice/hints on this matter it is appreciated if you add your 2 pence worth!

Hi, the plastic clips get hard with age and you should get new clips with the filter. Check the box as sometimes they are 'missing'.......Chrisshu.
